New Board For Nkana Appointed
The Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Hon. Eng. Collins Nzovu, MP, has announced the appointment of new Boards of Directors for eight of the country’s eleven commercial water utilities.
The affected utilities include Lusaka, Kafubu, Nkana, Mulonga, Chambeshi, Eastern, North Western, and Lukanga Water Supply and Sanitation Companies. The new boards are expected to inject strategic leadership and enhance performance in line with government’s commitment to expanding access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation across Zambia.
According to Hon. Nzovu, the move represents a major step in strengthening corporate governance, accountability, and operational efficiency in the water sector. He explained that the new boards comprise diverse professionals from engineering, finance, economics, law, and public administration—bringing together a blend of skills to drive innovation and results.
“The government is committed to ensuring that all citizens have access to clean, safe, and reliable water, as well as adequate sanitation services,” said Hon. Nzovu. “The newly appointed boards are tasked with steering their respective companies towards greater efficiency, financial sustainability, and improved service delivery. We are confident they will meet the expectations of the Zambian people.”
The boards will sign performance contracts with the ministry, setting measurable targets for project completion, financial performance, and service delivery. Among their top priorities will be:
Project Completion: Fast-tracking the delivery of ongoing water and sanitation infrastructure works.
Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs): Exploring investment partnerships to attract private capital and expertise.
Financial Performance: Strengthening revenue collection, reducing operational costs, and improving efficiency.
Sector Challenges: Addressing non-revenue water losses, aging infrastructure, and rising energy costs.
The Minister also emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, urging the new boards to work closely with management, staff, and local stakeholders. He further assured that government will continue providing policy guidance and financial support, stressing that universal access to water and sanitation remains a top national priority.
The new boards assume office with immediate effect.
Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Company’s Board will be chaired by Prof. Kakoma Maseka, Dean of the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Copperbelt University. Other members include:

Ms. Glenda Kasonde, Manager Health, Safety & Environment, Mopani Copper Mines
Dr. Patrick Sipopa Akayombokwa, Head of Projects, Mopani Copper Mines
